Ajith's next Vedalam. Here's a look at some of his memorable movies
The audience is waiting eagerly for the release of Ajith's next Vedalam.
Here's a look at some of his memorable movies in the past:
Directed by SJ Suryaah, this move
really showed off Ajith's acting abilities. He played two roles in the movie
romancing both Simran and Jyothika. The actor took home the Filmfare Award for
Best Actor (South) for this film. It was actor Sudeep who played the role of Ajith in the Kannada version of this film.
This movie was also helmed by ace
director KS Ravikumar and Ajith played three roles in this movie. Unlike
the other films where he played twin brothers, here he played father and twin
brothers. Asin was one of the main leads in this movie which had music by AR
Rahman.
Actress Sridevi made a comeback to Tamil films after more than 20 years with thePuli,
but is now caught
in a tangle over her salary for the film. Sridevi had filed a
complaint at the Mumbai producers' council
stating that she was yet to be paid Rs 50 lakhs for the film.
However, the
producers of 'Puli' are reportedly extremely upset over this claim. They issued
a statement to the press on Monday in which they clearly specified the
remuneration paid to her. Producers Shibu Thameens and PT Selvakumar have
stated that the income tax raids and the losses incurred in the film have left
them strapped for cash. They now want an amicable solution to the issue. The
producers state that they had agreed to paySridevi Rs 3 crore as salary (Rs 2.7 crore + Rs 30 lakhs service
tax). However, Sridevi's husband Boney Kapoor had demanded several
crores as remuneration for the Telugu and Hindi releases as well. They say
they explained to him that the dubbing rights belonged to the production house,
but agreed to pay Rs 15 lakhs for the Telugu dubbing rights and gave him 20% of
the Hindi satellite rights
The Puli producers further allege that
Boney Kapoor was also paid Rs 55 lakhs from the Hindu distributor of the
film. Thus, they state that Rs 20 lakhs of the money that had to be given
to the producers' was in fact given to Sridevi. In effect, they are stating that
they have paid Sridevi over and above the agreed compensation.
The letter released to the press also states that the
director Chimbudevan agreed to complete the film in 100 days, but
completed it in 150 days. This means they exceeded the budget on the film as
well. Since the movie got delayed, they say they incurred further losses. Puli was also not granted a tax
exemption, as a result of which they had to pay Rs 4.5 crore.
Actors Vijay, Shruti Haasan and Sudeep had small payments
pending from the producers, but they are said to have understood the situation
and waived off the payment. Sources say that the producers were grateful to the
three stars for this gesture. Sources add that the producers had explained
the situation on the phone to Boney Kapoor earlier and that he
had reportedly said that things were ok. So they were really surprised when
they received the complaint. The producers' are allegedly upset and since
Sridevi decided to file a formal complaint, they felt they had to issue a press
release to explain the situation and the reality, say sources.

Meanwhile, Chris Pine will appear as Wonder Woman's love interest Steve Trevor. Recent rumours suggested that the film would take place mostly in the modern era with flashbacks to World War I. It's also said that Wonder Woman would team up with Trevor to destroy Circe who,

Elvis always on my mind, says fan Joanna Lumley
The actress went on a
tour of Elvis's haunts and interviewed the singer's former wife Priscilla for
the filming of Elvis And Me, which focuses on his rise to fame and the early
years of his success.
Lumley, 69, became a fan
of Elvis, who would have been 80 this year, when she was a child
She said: "I felt
if I'd met him, I'd have obviously married him. And the fact that Priscilla was
gorgeous when she was 14, and I was a spotty nerd, was beside the point.
Everybody in the world felt: if I'd met Elvis, I would have been his best
friend, girlfriend. Everybody."
On interviewing Priscilla,
who met Elvis at the age of 14 and married him at 21, Lumley said: "I
loved her. She was extraordinarily generous
"It's a long time
since Elvis has died, and she's been asked everything about Elvis, everything's
been written about Elvis good or bad. The adoration is such that is like
practically a kind of religion, the love of Elvis.
"And she's
steadfastly had to endure that and make herself strong enough to cope with it.
She in her own right is a terrific person, but of course, we only really see
her as the Elvis bit."
She added: "He's
been my number one for ever and a day ... Elvis was always singing to me.
Obviously. And even Priscilla, when she wrote a sweet letter after we'd shown
the film to her, put: 'It was such a pleasure to show Joanna around Graceland,
the house which ought to have been hers' - with a smiley face."
The documentary focuses
on the early years of Elvis's life before his divorce, weight gain, heavy medication
use, health deterioration and death in 1977.
"I don't want to do
that, because that's not the Elvis the world loves. The world loves the boy who
sang Blue Suede Shoes, or Jailhouse Rock, who hung around with his great big
gang, who was very polite and called interviewers 'Sir'. There was something touching,
and I just wanted to know: how do you get to be there? How did this boy come?
Was he born like that? Was he made like that? Influenced to be like that?"
In the hour-long
documentary, she visits Abbey Road to watch a recording session of the new Elvis
album If I Can Dream with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, who are re-doing
the backing music to many of his most famous songs.
She also makes a trip to
Tupelo, Mississippi - Elvis's home town - where she visits the shack where he
was born and the hardware shop where he bought his first guitar.
She also talks to some
of the people who knew him, including Sam Bell, who reveals what life was like
for a young Elvis growing up in a time of segregation.
Lumley said: "There
was something about Tupelo, that I felt him. There was something about the boy
there in the hardware shop, and the guitar was there, and you get a feeling
going - oh he was only a little kid and this was - it's still a hardware shop.
"I felt him in the
cinema with Sam. Black friend Sam, in the cinema, from his childhood, when they
would have to go through separate entrances to the cinema, and Elvis would duck
under the rope and sit with them. And I loved him for that, because he was only
a little boy, and he was colour blind. He didn't get that, while the country
got that, Elvis didn't get that. And sitting in that little cinema, exactly
where they sat - that was something."
She added: "I feel
Elvis and I have always known each other. What I mean is that I found I'd got a
bit nearer to him, but there's something un-knowable about him I think,
too."
Lumley has also filmed
documentaries about pop star will.i.am, the Trans-Siberian railway, and the
Northern Lights - but now she is working on Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, due
out in 2016.
On reprising her role as
Patsy Stone alongside Jennifer Saunders' Edina Monsoon, she said: "You
only have to remember a few things. You just have to remember the body language
because she's had all her organs taken out. You just remember that she wears
hard - she wears hard red lips and things

Ricky Gervais to host Golden Globes
The 73rd ceremony
will take place on 10 January in Los Angeles.
Employing British
vernacular, Gervais tweeted "It's a good job I'm drunk. Otherwise the
thought of hosting The Golden Globes again would seem like a real pain in the
arse."
In a jibe at the US
Republican 2016 presidential candidate Donald Trump, Gervais tweeted "Now I want Donald Trump to stop saying
things until the day before The Golden Globes."
In 2011, many
critics felt Gervais would not be allowed to return to the Golden Globes,
saying he had "crossed lines of taste and civility".
American
broadcaster NBCUniversal confirmed Gervais had been named as host of the
ceremony.
NBC
Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt said - Disarming and surprising,
Ricky is ready to honour - and send up - the best work of the year in film and
television.
"Fasten

Priyanka Chopra 'most sensational celebrity' in Indian cyberspace
Priyanka Chopra, who is in news for her American TV debut in "Quantico", tops the list of "most sensational celebrity" as cyber crooks use her name to lure netizens to malicious websites, an Intel Security report said today.
In the surprise moves this year were Shraddha Kapoor's meteoric rise to number 2 (from number 6 last year) and Kapil Sharma's number 3 position marking the only TV personality to make to the list, a statement said.
"Cyber criminals keep a lookout for ways to take advantage of consumer interest around popular culture events including award shows, TV show premieres, film music launches, celebrity breakups, and more," Intel Security said.
"Cyber criminals capitalise on consumer interest around popular culture by luring unsuspecting consumers to risky sites to steal sensitive personal data," Intel Security Group India Engineering Centre Head Venkat Krishnapur said.
Others in the list include Jacqueline Fernandez, Kangana Ranaut, Hrithik Roshan,Deepika Padukone, Emran Hashmi, Sunny Leone, Alia Bhatt, Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor.
The report said users must beware of clicking on third party links and ensure they use web protection that notifies them of risky sites or links before they visit them.
"Only download videos from well-known, legitimate sites...Use caution when searching for 'Torrent'. This term is by far the highest virus-prone search term," it said.
Also, do not "log in" or provide other information like credit card, email, home address, Facebook login to get access to content, it added.
"Such requests are a common tactic for phishing that could lead to identity theft," it said.

Edward Snowden joins Twitter, makes fatal error, gets 47GB
Edward Snowden has had a bit of a slip up, and it
involves the internet: the NSA whistleblower forgot to turn off his
notifications when joining Twitter and fell victim to 47GB of notifications.
Amusingly enough, Snowden’s mistake is no more
than three days old. Currently, @Snowden has more than 1.23 million followers
(which he racked up in under 24 hours), and his first tweet alone secured
120,000 retweets and 110,000 likes – something few mortals can achieve in such
a short while.
With this Twitter account, it is
understood that the whistleblower wishes to establish an even stronger online
presence that aims to promote privacy rights and fight the establishment – a
fight he started in June 2013.
Asked only days before if he ever considered an account of his
own, Snowden told famed physicist Neil deGrasse Tyson in an interview: “It
sounds good, I think we’ve got to make it happen.”

Indian women’s cricket team 4th in ICC multi-format rankings
The new rankings
system will incorporate the results of Twenty20, ODI and Test matches and then
come out with a single rating. Not surprisingly, Australia are ranked number
one following its success in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2013 in India and the
World Twenty20 2014 in Bangladesh. It also leads the ICC Women’s Championship,
which is the qualifying tournament for the 2017 World Cup.
England are ranked
second in the 10-team table, 10 points behind Australia, followed by New
Zealand (109), India (105), West Indies (99), South Africa (92), Pakistan (81),
Sri Lanka (74), Bangladesh (57) and Ireland (26). Teams will be added to the
table as and when they reach the required standard.
which has already started to drive substantial increase in
public interest and participation as well as a marked improvement in the
standard of the international game.
The world’s fourth-ranked batswoman and Indian captain Mithali
Raj said, “I am happy to know that the ICC has launched the ICC Women’s Team
Rankings. There will now be added context when the sides play in bilateral
series as victories will not only edge teams closer to the ICC Women’s World
Cup but will also be rewarded in terms of improvement in rankings.
“For India, the aim is simple and straight -- qualify for the
ICC Women’s World Cup 2017 and, in the meantime, top the rankings. It will be
challenging but not impossible, and if we continue to work hard, I don’t see
why we can’t achieve these objectives.”
The annual update of
the team rankings, in which the oldest results will be dropped from rankings
and the weightings updated, will be carried out on October 1 each year, whereas
the annual updates for men’s Test, ODI and T20I team rankings take place in May.

Happy Birthday Ranbir Kapoor: Katrina Kaif has a surprise
Despite a list of hits and critical acclaims like Barfi, Rockstar and Wake Up Sid to his name, Ranbir Kapoor is at present facing a lean patch and, as a result, his fair share of brickbats. As much in news for his work as for his off-screen pairings with present girlfriend Katrina Kaif and ex-turned-friend Deepika Padukone, this Kapoor scion was spotted in London with Kat over the weekend.
Ranbir turns 33 on Monday and had a quite, working birthday planned for himself. He had even told media during Tamasha trailer launch last week that he would be working on his special day.
However, Katrina appeared to have surprised her beau and the couple was spotted in London together on Monday, where Ranbir is shooting for his next.
Earlier, at the Tamasha trailer launch, the actor -- who turns 33 on Monday -- had said he preferred working birthdays. “I don’t believe in birthdays. It makes me feel sad. I know most people feel special on this day. But I am happy when I am working. It’s great to do work,” Ranbir had said.
When his Tamsha co-star Deepika was asked what she would gift him, she said, “He has everything... lots of good wishes, love and happiness to him.”
Tamsha’s director Imtiaz suggested that Deepika should give Ranbir a cheque. To which Ranbir jokingly said, “I would prefer cash.” On being asked if he would have a dinner with his family and rumoured girlfriend Katrina Kaif, he had said, “We have had lots of nice family dinners. My parents (Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh) are in India they have come back from London.”

Priyanka Chopra was sceptical to sign 'Quantico'
American TV series “Quantico” is a big break for Priyanka Chopra in an international scene but the actress had second thoughts about signing the show as she felt it would require a long commitment.
The 33-year-old actress, who bagged the show during the shooting of “Gunday”, had her kitty full with back-to-back releases like “Mary Kom”, “Dil Dhadakne Do” and two upcoming projects “Bajirao Mastani” and “Jai Gangaajal”.
“I was a little sceptical initially because it’s a long commitment. I had to balance television and Hindi films. The script was incredible and I just couldn’t say no to it,” Priyanka told PTI in an exclusive interview over phone.
“I was shooting ‘Gunday’ when Kelly Lee, who is into casting, came to meet me. Then I had to go to LA and read the 25 pilots that they had picked for me and tell them the ones I liked. I am happy that I got my first pick, which was ‘Quantico’,” the actress said.
The show revolves around a group of young Federal Bureau of Investigation recruits, who are training at the FBI Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
Priyanka plays the lead character of Alex Parrish, who becomes the FBI’s prime suspect.
The former Miss World feels the viewers will like the mystery aspect of the series. “The audience would discover with me the various twists and turns,” she said.
Priyanka said her team and the people in the US have been warm to her.
“They are all amazing people. I am having a great time shooting for the show. They are treating me well,” she said.
The “Fashion” star cannot wait the audience to watch “Quantico”, which goes on air today in the US.
It will premiere in India on October 3 on Star World and Star World Premiere HD.
“I am excited as well as nervous. I am waiting to see the reaction of people. I am hoping people will like it. I have worked hard for this show. I just hope the audience loves it as much as I do,” Priyanka said.
The actress credits Bollywood stars like Anil Kapoor and Irrfan Khan for paving way for other Indian actors to get work in Hollywood.
“It is a great shift for Indian actors today. Anil Kapoor and Irrfan Khan have paved the way for us to be there by doing amazing work. I am happy we are getting the opportunity to show our talent to the world,” she said.
The National award-winning actress feels happy to have come a long way in her career.
“The world has become this big global family… The horizons are expanding. For me, a girl, who comes from (a small town like) Bareli, I see it as an incredible time for me after reaching here. I feel if I can do it, why can’t others,” Priyanka said.
Often Indian actors are not recognised for the cameos they do in Hollywood films or international TV shows but the actress is not bothered about this and prefers quality over quantity.
“I have learnt this from Amitabh Bachchan that the length of the role shouldn’t matter, the quality should. One should impress people with their presence. I feel all kind of work should be respected. I feel fortunate to have got this opportunity,” Priyanka said.
Kerala Government Website Hacked, Server Safe
The official website of the State government was hacked and defaced by unidentified hackers early morning on Sunday. Visitors to the website www.kerala.gov.in were greeted by the image of a burning national flag and slogans “hacked by Faisal 1337”, “Pakistan Zindabad” and “We are team Pak Cyber attacker” and “security is just an illusion”.
Officials of the Centre for Development of Imaging Technology (C-DIT), the government agency that maintains the website, said the hackers could not access the server and the website would be restored soon.
The hacker adopted the SQL injection technique to subvert the homepage of the site around 1 a.m. The cyber cell of the state police have initiated a probe into the incident. Assistant Commissioner of the Cell Vinayakumaran Nair said they have asked for the log details from the state IT Mission.
The officials said the identity of the hacker could only be ascertained after a detailed probe and the “pro-Pakistan” slogans could be an attempt to mislead. In similar incidents in the past, the officials said, the hackers had operated from the country itself.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told reporters that the government views the incident seriously.
Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala, in his Facebook post, said a security audit of all government websiteswould be conducted by the Cyberdome of the state police, which would start functioning soon. The Minister added that hacking occurs “worldwide”. Five months ago, about 30 websites of the state government agencies were hacked. The government has asked the State IT Mission to put in place necessary security arrangements to prevent such incidents in the future.
Kerala State IT Mission director Mohammed Safarulla said the hacking of website would not affect government’s e-services as the portal contained only general information. He said the website would be restored on Sunday night.
The government website is hosted at the State Data Centre-I. The data centre hosts crucial e-governance applications of the state and the hacker’s access to the official website has raised serious security questions.

India’s all-time highest grossing film Baahubali
I recently sat down with the technical gurus behind India’s
all-time highest grossing film Baahubali to ask one simple question: “How did
you pull it off?”
If you’ve seen the film you know it’s a visual feast that infuses
virtually every scene–whether romantic, intimately dramatic, or
heart-poundingly violent–with breathtaking CG images. As the former COO of a
major Hollywood visual effects company I know how difficult it is to pull off
this sort of magical spectacle with a $150 million production budget, let alone
the relatively miniscule $30 million budget the Baahubali team had at
their disposal.
Meeting with me to explain their techniques and strategies were
Pete Draper, the Co-Founder and Division Head at Makuta Visual Effects, the VFX
house that oversaw the majority of Baahubali’s 2,500
effects shots; Raja Koduri, head of the Radeon Technologies Group at Sunnyvale,
California-based AMD, which provided key technologies and hardware to the film;
Roy Taylor, AMD’s Corporate Vice President for Alliances; and
also the film’s director, S.S. Rajamouli,
and its producer, Shobu Yarlagadda. We convened at the Raleigh Studios Cafe in
Hollywood prior to their AMD-sponsored screening of the international cut of Baahubali: The Beginning in Raleigh’s Charlie Chaplin theater.
When I put my question to Mr. Rajamouli, he replied that on a project of Baahubali’s scale, it was very important that he have the
right technicians. In addition to having a superb multi-talented visual effects
supervisor/artist/vfx producer in Srinivas Mohan and great concept artists at
Makuta, he explained that the individuals assembled before me were no ordinary
group of graphics technicians. Koduri, who happens to be Rajamouli’s cousin, is
an engineering wizard who played an instrumental role in bringing the Retina
Display to market during a prior stint at Apple, and who has also been a
pioneer in the field of graphics processor units (GPUs), the
specialized electronic circuits designed to rapidly manipulate and alter memory
to accelerate the creation of video images. Draper, a transplanted Brit,
founded his Hyderabad India-based studio 7 years ago with a major contribution
from Rajamouli, and was a close technical collaborator with the director on his
previous films Yamadonga, Magadheera, and Eega.
Rajamouli explained
that the results his technical team delivered “seemed like a magic trick to me.
The budget was very low, but the audience doesn’t care, the film still had to
look great. I can’t run a subtitle on the screen with a disclaimer saying ‘We
didn’t have enough money to do this right.’ We had to get great results. Our
motto was ‘Achieve 90% of the quality of a Hollywood film for 20% Calendar Girls review !!!
There’s a scene in Nisha
Pahuja’s documentary The World Before Her when a Miss India
contestant whimpers that she doesn’t want whatever Dr Jamuna Pai wants to
inject into the young girl’s face. It’s going to make her lips plumper, Pai
promises. “Please let me do it,” says Pai in a voice that’s so polite and so
uncompromising that it will give you chills. For those who have seen The
World Before Her, Madhur Bhandarkar’s new film Calendar Girls packs
a punch with its very first shot. There on screen, with her upper lip plumped
to artificial perfection, is Ruhi Singh from The World Before Her.
She’s playing a young model from Rohtak who's been selected for a
much-publicised modeling event. The similarities between Singh’s real life and
the role she has in Calendar Girls are unmistakable. The parallels are a
reminder that Bhandarkar may be lamentable director and a terrible actor, but
the reason he can’t be dismissed is his ability to spot interesting stories in
real life. He’s shown this skill ever since Chandni Bar and
it’s why actors like Tabu, Konkona Sen Sharma, Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka
Chopra have worked with him. It's also the reason Bhandarkar has so many
National Awards to his name.Unfortunately,
Bhandarkar’s nose for stories isn’t matched either by his writing or
directorial talent. It doesn’t help that he chooses to collaborate with people
like his writing partner on Calendar Girls, Rohit Banawlikar. There
are a lot of people who work hard to make Calendar Girls worse
than it could have been, like the sound department that not only layers the
film with a terrible background score, but also makes it painfully obvious that
the dialogues were dubbed. However, few can match Banawlikar’s contribution toCalendar
Girls’ downfall. His dialogues are so awkward and stilted that you will
feel physical pain while listening to the actors struggle with their lines. This is particularly
disappointing because – brace yourselves – a lot of the conversations in Calendar
Girls pass the Bechdel Test. Much like in real life, the women chatter
a lot about work. They're ambitious, hardworking, and a credible mix of good
and bad qualities. They're all friends who accept each other's quirks with an
eye roll and a grin. Barring their terrible make-up and wardrobe, these women
are all surprisingly normal, which is a huge improvement from the last time
Bhandarkar wandered into the world of glamour, in the godawful Fashion.Mayuri from Rohtak,
Paroma Ghosh from Kolkata, Sharon Pinto from Goa, Nandita from Hyderabad and
Nazneen from Lahore-via-London are the calendar girls of the title. All of them
come to Mumbai with dreams of success. None of them wants to return to the
stifling worlds they've left behind. There’s one moment where someone asks
Sharon (Kyra Dutt), “Isn’t the glamour world all about booze, drugs, sex and
orgies?” Sharon drily replies, “I really hope so.”There are moments of
insight that Bhandarkar sprinkles in Calendar Girls that will
make you desperately wish this film had been attempted by a better director.
For instance, Mayuri (Ruhi Singh) from small-town India is keenly aware of
social media and adept at using it. She also gives us a hilarious description
of a make-out session in a tabela. Nandita (Akanksha Puri) from Hyderabad giggles and confesses
she’s ‘experimented’ with a girl. It’s poignant that Nandita is the first to
rush into marriage. You can't help but remember how vehemently and
unconvincingly she'd protested, "I'm straight" when she'd first
mentioned her lesbian experience. It's almost as though she's being goaded into
marriage by an anxiety that she may not be straight. At the same time, Calendar
Girls gives us bowtie-wearing photographers named Timmy (one expects a
Pomeranian, but sees Rohit Roy instead); a Bengali family (with ghastly
non-Bengali accents) that could be out of a soap opera; and every cliché you
can imagine. Suhel Seth does his best to be Vijay Mallya (La
Martiniere Kolkata has given us such great, great men). Ashoke Pandit also has
a cameo, as a hardworking CBI officer. A rich, aristocratic home has a replica
of David's "Napoleon Crossing the Alps" and fake Greek columns are
randomly scattered around the dining room.
