Elvis always on my mind, says fan Joanna Lumley
The actress went on a
tour of Elvis's haunts and interviewed the singer's former wife Priscilla for
the filming of Elvis And Me, which focuses on his rise to fame and the early
years of his success.
Lumley, 69, became a fan
of Elvis, who would have been 80 this year, when she was a child
She said: "I felt
if I'd met him, I'd have obviously married him. And the fact that Priscilla was
gorgeous when she was 14, and I was a spotty nerd, was beside the point.
Everybody in the world felt: if I'd met Elvis, I would have been his best
friend, girlfriend. Everybody."
On interviewing Priscilla,
who met Elvis at the age of 14 and married him at 21, Lumley said: "I
loved her. She was extraordinarily generous
"It's a long time
since Elvis has died, and she's been asked everything about Elvis, everything's
been written about Elvis good or bad. The adoration is such that is like
practically a kind of religion, the love of Elvis.
"And she's
steadfastly had to endure that and make herself strong enough to cope with it.
She in her own right is a terrific person, but of course, we only really see
her as the Elvis bit."
She added: "He's
been my number one for ever and a day ... Elvis was always singing to me.
Obviously. And even Priscilla, when she wrote a sweet letter after we'd shown
the film to her, put: 'It was such a pleasure to show Joanna around Graceland,
the house which ought to have been hers' - with a smiley face."
The documentary focuses
on the early years of Elvis's life before his divorce, weight gain, heavy medication
use, health deterioration and death in 1977.
"I don't want to do
that, because that's not the Elvis the world loves. The world loves the boy who
sang Blue Suede Shoes, or Jailhouse Rock, who hung around with his great big
gang, who was very polite and called interviewers 'Sir'. There was something touching,
and I just wanted to know: how do you get to be there? How did this boy come?
Was he born like that? Was he made like that? Influenced to be like that?"
In the hour-long
documentary, she visits Abbey Road to watch a recording session of the new Elvis
album If I Can Dream with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, who are re-doing
the backing music to many of his most famous songs.
She also makes a trip to
Tupelo, Mississippi - Elvis's home town - where she visits the shack where he
was born and the hardware shop where he bought his first guitar.
She also talks to some
of the people who knew him, including Sam Bell, who reveals what life was like
for a young Elvis growing up in a time of segregation.
Lumley said: "There
was something about Tupelo, that I felt him. There was something about the boy
there in the hardware shop, and the guitar was there, and you get a feeling
going - oh he was only a little kid and this was - it's still a hardware shop.
"I felt him in the
cinema with Sam. Black friend Sam, in the cinema, from his childhood, when they
would have to go through separate entrances to the cinema, and Elvis would duck
under the rope and sit with them. And I loved him for that, because he was only
a little boy, and he was colour blind. He didn't get that, while the country
got that, Elvis didn't get that. And sitting in that little cinema, exactly
where they sat - that was something."
She added: "I feel
Elvis and I have always known each other. What I mean is that I found I'd got a
bit nearer to him, but there's something un-knowable about him I think,
too."
Lumley has also filmed
documentaries about pop star will.i.am, the Trans-Siberian railway, and the
Northern Lights - but now she is working on Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, due
out in 2016.
On reprising her role as
Patsy Stone alongside Jennifer Saunders' Edina Monsoon, she said: "You
only have to remember a few things. You just have to remember the body language
because she's had all her organs taken out. You just remember that she wears
hard - she wears hard red lips and things

Ricky Gervais to host Golden Globes
The 73rd ceremony
will take place on 10 January in Los Angeles.
Employing British
vernacular, Gervais tweeted "It's a good job I'm drunk. Otherwise the
thought of hosting The Golden Globes again would seem like a real pain in the
arse."
In a jibe at the US
Republican 2016 presidential candidate Donald Trump, Gervais tweeted "Now I want Donald Trump to stop saying
things until the day before The Golden Globes."
In 2011, many
critics felt Gervais would not be allowed to return to the Golden Globes,
saying he had "crossed lines of taste and civility".
American
broadcaster NBCUniversal confirmed Gervais had been named as host of the
ceremony.
NBC
Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt said - Disarming and surprising,
Ricky is ready to honour - and send up - the best work of the year in film and
television.
"Fasten
your seatbelts.

Priyanka Chopra 'most sensational celebrity' in Indian cyberspace
Priyanka Chopra, who is in news for her American TV debut in "Quantico", tops the list of "most sensational celebrity" as cyber crooks use her name to lure netizens to malicious websites, an Intel Security report said today.
In the surprise moves this year were Shraddha Kapoor's meteoric rise to number 2 (from number 6 last year) and Kapil Sharma's number 3 position marking the only TV personality to make to the list, a statement said.
"Cyber criminals keep a lookout for ways to take advantage of consumer interest around popular culture events including award shows, TV show premieres, film music launches, celebrity breakups, and more," Intel Security said.
"Cyber criminals capitalise on consumer interest around popular culture by luring unsuspecting consumers to risky sites to steal sensitive personal data," Intel Security Group India Engineering Centre Head Venkat Krishnapur said.
Others in the list include Jacqueline Fernandez, Kangana Ranaut, Hrithik Roshan,Deepika Padukone, Emran Hashmi, Sunny Leone, Alia Bhatt, Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor.
The report said users must beware of clicking on third party links and ensure they use web protection that notifies them of risky sites or links before they visit them.
"Only download videos from well-known, legitimate sites...Use caution when searching for 'Torrent'. This term is by far the highest virus-prone search term," it said.
Also, do not "log in" or provide other information like credit card, email, home address, Facebook login to get access to content, it added.
"Such requests are a common tactic for phishing that could lead to identity theft," it said.

Edward Snowden joins Twitter, makes fatal error, gets 47GB
Edward Snowden has had a bit of a slip up, and it
involves the internet: the NSA whistleblower forgot to turn off his
notifications when joining Twitter and fell victim to 47GB of notifications.
Amusingly enough, Snowden’s mistake is no more
than three days old. Currently, @Snowden has more than 1.23 million followers
(which he racked up in under 24 hours), and his first tweet alone secured
120,000 retweets and 110,000 likes – something few mortals can achieve in such
a short while.
With this Twitter account, it is
understood that the whistleblower wishes to establish an even stronger online
presence that aims to promote privacy rights and fight the establishment – a
fight he started in June 2013.
Asked only days before if he ever considered an account of his
own, Snowden told famed physicist Neil deGrasse Tyson in an interview: “It
sounds good, I think we’ve got to make it happen.”

Indian women’s cricket team 4th in ICC multi-format rankings
The new rankings
system will incorporate the results of Twenty20, ODI and Test matches and then
come out with a single rating. Not surprisingly, Australia are ranked number
one following its success in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2013 in India and the
World Twenty20 2014 in Bangladesh. It also leads the ICC Women’s Championship,
which is the qualifying tournament for the 2017 World Cup.
England are ranked
second in the 10-team table, 10 points behind Australia, followed by New
Zealand (109), India (105), West Indies (99), South Africa (92), Pakistan (81),
Sri Lanka (74), Bangladesh (57) and Ireland (26). Teams will be added to the
table as and when they reach the required standard.
which has already started to drive substantial increase in
public interest and participation as well as a marked improvement in the
standard of the international game.
The world’s fourth-ranked batswoman and Indian captain Mithali
Raj said, “I am happy to know that the ICC has launched the ICC Women’s Team
Rankings. There will now be added context when the sides play in bilateral
series as victories will not only edge teams closer to the ICC Women’s World
Cup but will also be rewarded in terms of improvement in rankings.
“For India, the aim is simple and straight -- qualify for the
ICC Women’s World Cup 2017 and, in the meantime, top the rankings. It will be
challenging but not impossible, and if we continue to work hard, I don’t see
why we can’t achieve these objectives.”
The annual update of
the team rankings, in which the oldest results will be dropped from rankings
and the weightings updated, will be carried out on October 1 each year, whereas
the annual updates for men’s Test, ODI and T20I team rankings take place in May.
